Fatherhood is a special vocation. It carries the great responsibility of continuing the creation work of God. It is to raise a family and foster up the family in the love of God. It is making the children know and love God and prepare them to be God’s children through his own exemplary life.

An ancient Tamil poem called Thirukkural says the duty of a father is to educate his children and make him sit in the first row of the king’s court. It fits to a Christian father as his duty is to give the children knowledge and make them worthy of entering the Kingdom of God.

Most of the Christian fathers are carrying out this duty well and taste the love of God in their families. They need to be patted on their backs for being faithful in their duty as a good Christian father. Here are a few tips just to make the modern Christian dads more faithful in their heavenly vocation.

1) Teach your children faith

In the modern busy lifestyle Christian values based on Christian faith are neglected. Perhaps the busy schedule may not allow the fathers to pay attention to this. When you teach them about molecules, or germs, do not forget to teach them about creation and being faithful to God. As you nurture them with food, you should nurture them in faith also.

2) Do not forget forgiveness

Forgiveness is the most essential Christian virtue. Christ showed us the great example. It needs to be taught from cradle. When time comes, introduce them the Christian value of Reconciliation. Accountability to God and forgiveness of sins are the great portals of Christianity to give life confidence and meaning.

3) Play, pray and have fun

Being together is very important in the hustle and bustle of modern life. Somehow find time to be united in the family to play, pray and have fun. All these three are important. God does not want man to lead a monotonous mechanic life. He wants humans to be united in happiness.

4) Every week Lord’s Day can be Father’s Day

Sunday is supposed to be a day of obligation. Let it be a Father’s Day when the whole family meets and shares the love of God in some way. Running for money and pleasure will never end unless you have a break. Relationship and sharing of love is more important than running after wealth.

5) Nurture the character of thanking

Thank God, your spouse and children for everything. It is the source of immense happiness. It makes the earthly life a paradise. Let the children learn from you the habit of thanking for every good.
