When God created this world and gave it to humanity as a great gift, He found it the happiest place He can give to the most joyful life of humans. “And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.” (Genesis 1:31) The environment He gave to humanity was an immaculate and pleasant one.

Did God send global warming?

But today it is polluted and has lost most of its dignity. The environment is polluted and is made unworthy for healthy living. The seasons seem to be failing. The earth is becoming hotter and hotter. Rivers are running dry exposing barrenness. The snow cap over the earth is melting and the sea water level is rising up. Forest cover is disappearing by encroachments. Mineral wealth of the earth is being over exploited and is disappearing at the fastest rate. The unbalancing of the earth’s forces is causing unexpected calamities like droughts, floods and earthquakes. There is no other go for nature except turning against humanity since she is losing her balance. How all these pollution and global warming happened?

God told man to utilize the natural resources

When God told man, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it,” (Genesis 1:28) did He mean that man should exploit it and damage the earth? Of course, it is the earth that feeds man with air, water and food and provides everything for this happy survival. It gives him light and space to make him live well. And yet, why man is destroying the earth by his destructive manipulations and over consumptions? Earth still can meet all the needs of all the people, if the resources are utilized properly. That is the plan of God when He entrusted this earth with human care.

But how can the earth or God satisfy the GREED of some human beings who exploit every resource?

Science and technology have unlocked the secrets of the earth and have increased the usefulness of natural resources. The media and communications have made the whole world a small village. With newer means of production the earth can feed and meet the needs of every human being. This sharing life is the purpose of human existence.

But greed of some is depriving the earth its right to serve the needs of all.

About 15% of people, by their over consumption and wastage of earth’s resources, are depriving the majority of the earth’s goods that are rightfully theirs. Another worse thing is, by depleting the earth’s resources by unbridles consumption they are depriving future generations of what is rightfully theirs. It may even pave the way for their disappearance from the face of the earth.

It is Christian duty to go eco-friendly

Rights go together with duties. Nature has to feed higher life forms. A certain damage involved at one stage may harm the transformation of the whole nature. Christian tradition looks at nature as the world becomes the body of God. It is on this earth that God took the form of man as Jesus. The whole universe is the body of God when God will be all in all. “When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things under him, that God may be everything to everyone.” (1 Cor.15:28)

All the ancient religions speak of “mother earth.” Such an attitude should lead us to a new way of living. We should start sharing the earth’s resources with everyone. We should stop wasting the goods of the earth in any form-- water, food, energy in every form. We should hold hands together in tapping the natural resources such as the sun and the wind.

To be short, let us turn back to a more natural way of living, abandoning the artificial ways to which we have become accustomed. For, a life with nature is Godly.
