Our faith and belief in God for a vast majority of Christians is pretty easy when we have plenty of money in our pockets, more than enough good food, lots of friends, and a nice warm and comfortable bed to come to. It is when difficult times roll into your lives that one comes to learn just how strong one’s faith really is.
United States Army Sergeant Diane Moeller (not her actual name) was on duty in Iraq as a supply sergeant. While involved in transporting food and medical supplies, an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) went off. When she regained conscientiousness, she was in a Medical Aid Service Hospital (MASH) recovering from emergency surgery. Sergeant Moeller learned that she was the only survivor from her vehicle and that both of her legs were gone.
An active Christian before her losses, many wondered how this severe injury and loss of her faith. Though she struggled mentally and spiritually with her losses, she credited God’s grace for seeing her through the most difficult time of her life.
Now back home in the United States, Diane was heard to say: “I’m not getting through the loss of my legs and friends because I’m a strong person. I’m not. I’m getting through all of this because I have a wonderful Father above who has given me so much! He has given me more then I deserve. At this point in my life I’m not sure of what He wants me to do. I know He has something in my future however long that is. I should have died with the rest of my friends. Now I’m seeking my response through prayer and Scripture. When I have asked Him in the past, He has given me an answer. So this is how I am able to deal with my past and will deal with my circumstance”.
Like Sergeant Moeller, another soldier of the Iraqi War, though he lost no body parts, did return unable to cope following his combat experience. His wife abandoned him; he lost his high paying as well as his house. As he struggled to put his life back together, he turned to prayer and the 23rd Psalm: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and staff, they comfort me.” His struggles continue and his faith grows.
These warriors who fought bravely that many may live freely here and abroad reminds this writer of the words of another wounded warrior: “The secret of my faith is to come closer to God when everything is going great in life, and He will come to be with you, guide you and in you when things are at their worst.”
