The Holy Spirit
One doesn’t hear much these days from pulpit or pew about the Third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit and His active presence in the hearts of Christians. Sometimes He is dismissed as a ghostly apparition that doesn’t quite fit into Sunday school literature or the pulpit. But that’s not what Scripture says. It is a study too vital to living the Christian life to be safely neglected. Jesus has gone to be with the Father, but He did not leave us without a Counselor, Comforter and Guide. When a person becomes a believer in Christ and is baptized, he receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. In the heart of every Christian the Holy Spirit lives, maybe ignored into silence, but present nonetheless. A Christian who feasts regularly on the Word and is often in prayer for the Spirit to guide him, will find himself being led into paths of righteousness.
I beg you to study the following Scriptures which assure Christians that the Holy Spirit is alive and well in their hearts and eager to advise, comfort, and advocate for them before the Father.
John 14:16-17 And I will pray the Father and He will give you another Helper that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him but you know Him for He dwells with you and will be in you.
John 15:26 But when the Helper comes whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of me.
Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.
Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
1 Cor. 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may know the things that have been freely given to us by God. 13 These things we also speak not in man’s wisdom, but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
Eph. 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
There are many more Bible texts that confirm the Holy Spirit’s role in the redemption of mankind. But perhaps this sprinkling will encourage a further study of this integral part of the Christian life. Be comforted and rejoice that we have a very present Guide leading us home.
