DIVIDED WE FALL

Oswald Chambers was a prominent early twentieth century Scottish Christian (l874-1917) who thought deeply and expressed himself vigorously and profusely. He said, “It takes God a long time to get us out of the way of thinking that unless everyone sees as we do, they must be wrong. That is never God’s view. There is only one liberty, the liberty of Jesus at work in our conscience enabling us to do what is right. Jesus said, Go and make disciples, not converts to your opinions.”—MY UTMOST FOR HIS HIGHEST.

Although these are the words of a mere man, and written long ago, they have a strong Biblical base. Unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace is clearly taught in Scripture. (Ephesians 4:1-6) Fractured and fragmented, the Christian community is crippled in its call to an unbelieving world. If we can’t even get along among ourselves, the world discounts the value of our Product, which is the saving grace of the Gospel of Christ. The Second Great Commandment after loving God is to love one another. And it IS a command, not a suggestion. Altering the old expression a little, the devil is in the details of man-made traditions, inherited religion, and a thousand differing quirks of personality which together are crippling our effectiveness in calling the world to follow our Lord and Savior, which, when you think about it, is really our primary mission. Remember Christ’s parting words, “All power is given to Me in heaven and earth. You go therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the world.” (Matt. 28:19-20) Today we need to love one another, to stand together and to offer Jesus’ sweet invitation to a world that needs Him so badly, for Tomorrow may be too late.
