ON THE VERGE OF ETERNITY
I stand on the verge of time
Looking, seeing, waiting;
Looking for a place to write my name
Seeing a grave to bury my hope
Waiting for a day that may never come.

I stand on the verge of fame
Sweating, dreaming, hoping.
Sweating in the cold of life’s harmattan;
Dreaming of the future i hope will someday be,
Hoping in the dream for which i sweat.

I stand on the verge of life,
Building, crying, smiling.
Toiling to add meaning to my life,
Crying, often rejected by those for whom i labour
Smiling? A tantalizing offer often taken away.

I stand on the verge of eternity
Waiting, ready, dying.
Waiting for my time here to elapse;
Ready to hear the verdict of my toils;
Dying to see heaven’s light.

I stand on the verge of eternity.
Drawn closer there every morning
And now my life must be weighed
On the scale of what could have been
Against what has been.
Will my dreams be heavier than my reality?
Will my sweat outweigh my tears?
On the verge of eternity.

Will i write my name today
Or wait for another day that never may come;
I stand on the verge of eternity.
With just one chance and my choice
Soon this fleeting season of mine will pass
Like a cloud driven away by the wind
And the tide of time shall cease
When i cross alone
The gulf between the living and life
Without a chance or a choice
To make between the dying and death
This is my moment
On the verge of eternity.
