Short Stories
It was a Monday afternoon in Akure, Ondo State, just about 12.30 pm and already the sun was out in all its glory, heating up what was left of the cool morning air.
Omotsein sat behind her desk in the classroom, looking out the window. It was the last day of mid-term break, so there were no classes at the moment. She just stared out looking at the influx of students pouring into the school grounds, from their short break.
For the past three years, since she started attending St. Itas College, this had been her routine. She never went home for the breaks because she lived in another city and the logistics of travelling was too tedious for her family to encourage it. So, she had resigned herself to her lot and had learned over time, every term, to feign disinterest and nonchalance during this time. She had learned to battle homesickness and deal with the near loneliness that the empty dormitories taunted her with at the end of the first day of the breaks when the rooms drained themselves of their occupants in droves.
But whenever the students were due to resume, she found solace in her classroom, behind her books. In this way, she killed two birds with one stone, so it would seem – she avoided meeting her returning dorm mates with all their goodies and questions and empathy; she also engrossed herself in studies, thereby compensating herself by reading ahead of her class.
