The peace that passes understanding is an intriguing Scriptural term. If it's past understanding, how does one know when he has it?

When there is no earthly reason to feel at ease but it is felt anyway, then the basis of the phrase begins to dawn. When the little dove that flew from the window of the ark to check things out came back, she no doubt felt refuge. True, nothing much had visibly changed since she left; there was still water as far as the eye could see in any direction. But she had returned to sanctuary and safety, and peace that passed understanding was definitely there. And Noah and his family no doubt felt that same kind of peace with nothing human or physical to justify it.

So the peace that passes understanding must be God-given and completely spiritual and have little or nothing to do with human understanding. It's just there. Our hearts somehow connect with God, and we KNOW that everything is going to be all right which results in peace we cannot quite explain, but oh, how warm, comforting and reassuring it feels! We rest on His promises and nothing else. Peace descends, and we don't have to understand, just accept it and say, Thank you, dear Father!
