This haunting question was posed by Jeremiah, the weeping prophet of long ago, to his beloved Jerusalem whose sins had separated her from God. Although he spent his entire life pleading for the people to return to Jehovah, there is no record that a single one ever responded. The Book of Lamentations tells this sad story.
Centures pass, and another Prophet is sent first to Jerusalem, and then to the uttermost parts of the earth. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to earth to redeem mankind. He preached the Gospel (His death, burial and resurrection), healed the sick, comforted the broken-hearted. offered hope to everyone: the gospel of deliverance from their sordid, sin-sick lives. He walked among us, loving greatly, serving humbly and teaching the Way, the Truth and the Life which He epitomized. But He came first to Jerusalem as did Jeremiah. He came to His own, and they received Him not. First His heart was broken, then His body was broken by those He had come to save. And His plaintive cry echoed Jeremiah's of old. And this is the last and final call:
"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! See! Your house is left to you desolate, for I say to you, you shall see me no more till you say, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Matt. 23:37, 38
That sad, haunting cry, "Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?" can still be heard echoing in our world today. We are not feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, housing the homeless, taking care of the widows and orphans because they are still with us by the untold millions. By and large our lives are not reflecting the values Jesus taught and died for. We've lost our way. May our hearts wake up before our Savior weeps over us one last time.
