Strengthening Exercises

Stephen A. Peterson

Let your hope keep you joyful, be patient in your troubles, and pray at all times.

Romans 12:12 (NIV)

In 1989 following surgery to re-attach a severed lower leg, I learned that my physical well being as well as obtaining the fullest walking range would improve more rapidly by taking my physician’s recommendation and regimentation to heart. That is, to do specific exercises for 20 minutes each day until he evaluated the strength of my injured leg. Putting in the time religiously to this routine, though very painful, made it possible for me to walk sooner and without the predictive limp.

Being disciplined in this manner made me more aware of the value of self-control and discipline in my Christian walk. From this event, I realize the importance of daily prayer and Biblical reading for strengthening my Christian walk. I am able to think deeply about my relationship with God, my responsibilities as a Christian-Catholic and my responsibilities to my neighbors who do not know Christ, His principles, the Good News, and the Greatest Story ever told. As a counselor, this may be just a word of support or encouragement that “I care” and may be what that person needs to hear.

Just as important is the discipline of admitting that I too have those moments when I need to seek help and advice when person problems arise. This discipline holds true in my spiritual journey toward my eternal crown. Talking with family and friends, sharing problems and joys makes one grow spiritually. Just as beginning my day with leg related strengthening exercises so the time I spend praying and reading the Bible, I found has strengthen me spiritually.

Prayer: Almighty Father, thank you for each day for giving me the opportunity to strengthen my spiritual walk with the joys, challenges and opportunities the days present to do Your will.

Thought for the Day: Take time for God daily to strengthen one’s spiritual walk.
