What if….?

Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today and forever.

Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

A number of years ago, an Oklahoma newspaper asked its readers what they thought it would be like if Jesus Christ came back to earth this very day. Reader responses were published two weeks later and were varied yet fascinating to read. One response was: “Few would even recognize Him because so many people are convinced He is a non-person, a myth.” Another response: “Christ would condemn most people who believe themselves to be Christians as hypocrites not unlike the Scribes and Pharisees of nearly 2000 year ago.”

Many people, in some way felt that people even in this so called modern day and age would re-crucify Christ in ways more ghastly then the Romans and Jews even though they believe themselves above barbaristic methods. As one reads this piece, maybe you are beginning to wonder how you would respond to such a question. So while you are thinking about the question or rejecting it altogether, I found a response from Father Basil Keenan, O.S.B., a Roman Catholic priest, particularly interesting. The priest responded, “The question is fascinating but academic. Jesus is here. Right now! His church is here not in buildings but among His faithful followers. It is we who miss His splendor because so many never desire to know Him. Doesn’t matter whether they are Christian or not. But His invitation is still there if we are willing to take it because it is free. ’Come to Me, all you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.’”

Prayer: I pray, Lord, for I know you hear me and I know you are here among we your faithful and the hateful of your person. May we be vigilant with Your most Holy Name on our hearts and minds.
