As we start 2011 we see that the United States is almost bankrupt, the national debt per person is now over $45,000.00 - they say 42 cents of every dollar we spend is borrowed. Then there is healthcare – Republicans think it is ok if about 45 million Americans do not have any healthcare. In spite of the fact that we pay more per person for health care than any other nation, 8-10 industrialized nations have higher life expectancies AND lower infant mortality rates than the USA. Then there is energy, America imports over 50% of its oil, which is 9-12 million barrels a day. We have no national energy policy, though every president since Nixon has said we need one. We are fighting two wars at once, with approximately 185,000 US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, with no prospect of winning either war. There is little prospect for improvement in those countries, though we are spending billions of dollars and using precious American blood. They say 1 of every 30 people you meet are not citizens of this country, yet many leaders think foreigners should be rewarded for breaking the laws our ancestors had to follow when they came to America.


But the thing that bothers me most in our country is the hatred between conservatives and liberals. Each paints the other as traitors out to destroy the republic. It seems more important to them to try and score political points than to solve the problems already mentioned. Only a dictator gets everything he wants. But each faction seems to demand their whole agenda with no willingness to negotiate. Because of this I fear for our country. Our problems are formidable, but they could be solved if the two sides were willing to discuss and cooperate.
