Anger stuffed in a hole in the ground,
I buried it so deep
That it wouldn't be found.
I thought that you had died that day
In that hole in the ground,
But you were just lurking there,
Not making a sound.
Nearly forgotten,
All buried in earth,
You were just waiting
For your moment of rebirth.

Violated by words
That should have been a blessing,
Belittled and devalued,
I was only regressing.
Territories were crossed,
Having no boundaries in place,
My father, my family,
I hung my head in disgrace.

Instead of your bluster,
Instead of your power,
I chose to find the nearest
Corner to cower.
Being wounded and scourged
By verbal abuse,
I still refused my own
Anger to loose.

Bruises and injuries
And broken bones mend,
But words that hurt

Repeat over and over again.
With a careless word,
Just a slip of the tongue,
Is where a lot of
This pain is hung.

Despite the grand burial
I gave you back then,
I somehow dug you back up again.
It wasn't my wish
To disturb you that day,
But it must have been time
For the Lord to have His way;
To nudge me and prod me,
And cause me to deal
With issues and problems,
And to let myself heal.

You sneaked up behind me,
And without invitation,
You muscled on in
And just took up your station.
The roots that you planted
Went deep down inside,
To that reservoir of pain
I tried all these years to hide.

Now, as I go along
From day to day,
What irritation and anger
I seem to display!
From the smallest infraction
Of my sense of fair-play,
To the issues of life
That rise from all my yesterdays.

I must learn to harness
These volatile expressions,
As I learn from all of your
Valuable lessons.
With boundaries in place,
My life can be my own,
I can stand my own ground
And make my thoughts
And feelings known.
I'll need no excuses,
Have no need for dismay,
I'll only need to stand strong
In what is today.
