Here is a 21st century definition of the word "ambition" -- "All I
want is less to do, more time to do it, and higher pay for not getting
it done."
Many moons ago, at Pinebrook Bible Conference, one of our
favorite speakers was Dr. Andrew Telford. He is credited with
saying, "Laboring on old familiar truths tends to dull the senses."
Do you realize how much truth is hidden in that quote?
In many of our churches we have rehashed the same stories over
and over again until they lose their impact. We seemingly are
afraid to dig into new truth. That can even be true in our personal
study. That's why I keep suggesting that we read those familiar
passages in a newer translation -- it perks up the mind simply
because that truth may be stated in a new and refreshing way.
It takes self discipline, but the next time you read your Bible,
imagine you are reading it for the very first time, and then ask,
"What is it telling me that will make me a better person today --
what is it saying to me that will help me be a better representative
of Jesus Christ to those around me?"
In Psalm 34:15 we read (niv), "The eyes of the Lord are on the
righteous and his ears are attentive to their cry." We could take
editorial liberty and also say, "The eyes of the world are on the
righteous, and their eyes and ears are attentive to how we live."
We may be the only Bible they read.
