A Grandmother's Principles

O that there were such a heart in them that they would fear me, and keep all My Commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children forever.
Deuteronomy 5:29 (NIV)
As a boy my Native American grandmother (my mother’s mother) insisted on everything being in its proper place. She would also tell us that the universe is God’s not humankind’s and as soon as humans began replacing God’s principles with their own then those things evil would replace those things good for a short time. She would say that evil will not stand as God is in control no matter how bad the situation seemed.
Here are ten principles my now graduated grandmother told me more than forty years ago that seems applicable in 2004:
· You cannot remain free by depending on government to solve your individual and social problems.
· You cannot maintain peace among people by preaching hatred and revenge for past injustices.
· You cannot maintain character by eliminating God from the public forum.
· You cannot maintain social order by people doing what they want to when they want to without rules and laws higher than humankind’s. (Remember: Rights comes only from God. Humans make privileges that are an extension of rights).
· You cannot live your life complaining about the bad things that happened to you in your past.
· You cannot make a poor person better by destroying those who are wealthy.
· You cannot spend more than what you have earned and expect to live in peace and freedom.
· You cannot expect to be loved unless you can give love without conditions and trust.
· You cannot expect to be free and be ignorant.
· You cannot expect peace of mind and conscience if you do not live by the Ten Commandments of God.
I owe much to my grandmother who never went to school in her 102 years she was allowed by God to live on this earth. She did, with the help of men and women of God, learn to read her Bible, raise Godly children and make profound statements regarding life, living and true brotherhood/sisterhood among humankind even though she and her children suffered hatred and exclusion during much of her life for being a Native American.
Prayer: Almighty Father teach us to obey all words of wisdom that show us how to live with our neighbors
