Eric and the Car Keys

I tossed the keys into the air’
They fell to earth – oh no, not there!
That splash I heard, that sound I hate.
They fell right through a sewer grate.

I was always good at catch.
My skills most kids could never match.
I have trophies on the wall
Attesting I can catch a ball.

I guess car keys are not the same.
Oh, woe is me, I’ve lost my aim.
Now, what ever will I do?
Papaw’s keys have fallen through.

That grate must weigh a hundred pounds,
Which put the keys far out of bounds.
Perhaps a crane will pass this way
To lift the grate and save the day.

I’ll not play catch with keys no more.
My life is finished. Oh what horror!
But dad and passerby jumped in
To lift the grate and save my skin.

I’ve learned a lesson from all this.
All fun in life does not bring bliss.
The next time I toss keys - it’s clear,
I’ll make sure there’s no sewer near.

There’s still a problem I must face.
The thought of it is a disgrace.
When you jump into a sewer,
Your shoes will smell just like a m-oldy leather.
