Psalm 119.57

The right choice

"The Lord is my portion; I have promised to keep Your words" [Psalm 119.57 NASB]

We all live in a world where stability and certainty cannot always be found no matter the words and guarantees which are repeatedly used to seduce us. However, it is really good to be assured that it is the other way around in the world we are going to.

David, even though a king had the discernment to realize that what is seen is temporary. Once we have tasted, even for the first time, the powers of the world to come we also know the difference. However, it is usually at this juncture that a different viewpoint is inserted. You can have, the insidious voice implies, the best of both worlds.

What should the believer do?

Remember your predecessors in the faith, "Moses thought it was better to suffer for the sake of the Messiah than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to the great reward that God would give him." [Heb. 11.26 NLT].

Regardless of what you are hearing and feeling, "… remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can't stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it." [1 Cor 10.13 NLT]

Finally, remember what happened to the Lord: "I will give it all to you…. if you will only kneel down and worship me." How did the Lord respond? "Get out of here, Satan," Jesus told him. [Matt 4.9-10 NLT]

With these three positive Scriptural affirmations ringing in our ears we know that there is no viable alternative; therefore, let us reconfirm our unswerving commitment and say with David, "The Lord is my portion." [David McArdle]
