One of the most troubling times for a person who lives alone is a sleepless night. Your body is worn, yet your brain won’t give in to sleep. I have had such nights in the past where I thought I would never again find my sleep zone.

Usually, when I have trouble sleeping it is due to stress, or problems of life that whirl around in my head disallowing me the opportunity to rest. I toss and turn, plump my pillows, pull the covers tighter, release the covers, and grumble to myself about not being able to sleep. Eventually, I end up sitting in my rocking chair starring out the window.

I live in a Military town and most of my immediate neighbors are Military related. They go to bed early in order to attend to their jobs on the Army base. As I gaze aimlessly from one house to the next without reason, I notice most houses are dark and void of any apparent action taking place within. At this point, I feel as though I am the only person in the neighborhood who is deprived of sleep.

Several nights ago I was a victim of a sleepless night. After going through the rituals of tossing, turning and frustration, I finally arose from my bed and went to my computer. Playing games on the computer in the wee hours of the morning often makes me tired, my eyes grow heavy and I can fall asleep. This particular night the games did not convey to my intentions. My clock alerted me to the time when I heard it strike three times. Three O’clock in the A.M. and I am still wide-eyed and wishful. The more I considered the time the angrier I became.

As a child I was told that when you can’t sleep to blame it on the devil. He wants to see you tormented and angry hence he keeps you awake with worries you can do nothing about. If that be the case, knowing the devil detest the very mention of God’s existence in our lives, and the mere mention of His name will drive Satan from my presence, my sleeping antidote may just work. I returned to my bed, pulled the cover over me, relaxed and began saying the Lord’s Prayer. I prayed with enthusiasm, speaking each word slowly and clearly so the culprit stealing my joy and peace could hear and plainly understand that I meant business.

I don’t recall when I went to sleep, but I do recall that I had not yet started my second round. Amazing, that God is everything Satan wants to be, but at the very mention of His Holy name Satan tucks and runs.

Though I have in recent months suffered many trials at the strong arm of Satan, God has sustained me. Every day, regardless of any situation I may endure, I know from where cometh my strength.

Satan has a bag full of tricks he throws at the Christian heart. He tempts me with fear, disillusionments, anxiety and depression. God did not give me the Spirit of fear, He gave me, 3,000 years ago all that I needed to rescue me from sleepless, fearful nights. He gave me Jesus. No concern I encounter is to big for Him to handle. When my nights are sleepless, I call on Him. His lights are always on, and He stays up all night…every night.
