Samuel Johnson said, “Music is the only sensual pleasure without vice.” Addison, in his ‘Song for Cecilia’s day, says, “Music is the greatest good that mortals know, and all of heaven we have below.” Music imbeds our daily life, weaving its beauty and emotion through our thoughts, memories and activities. It makes you relax, reduces your stress, and makes you feel happier.

In the holy Bible, we see in many places song that emanate from hearts filled with God’s love and grace. In the gospels, Luke records the songs of Mary and Zechariah; he praises the new-born Messiah through the angels of the sky. Simeon praises God and blesses the divine child. Every song praises the wonderful ways of Divine Providence.

1) The song of Mary

Mary sings her song ‘Magnificat’ when she was greeted by Elizabeth, exalting Mary’s faith in God. Mary’s soul proclaims her greatest joy in manifesting the greatness of God. This song contains the whole history of Israel. It narrates how God was leading the Israelites through thick and thin.

2) Song of Zechariah

When Zechariah was healed from his dumbness, which he had from the conception of his son John the Baptist, his heart is filled with joy at God’s wonderful work through him. “Zechariah, filled with Holy Spirit, sang this canticle. ‘Blessed be the lord God of Israel, for he has come and redeemed his people. He has raised up for us a victorious Savior.”(Luke 1:67-69)

3) Song of angels at the birth of the Savior

The heavenly spirits praised God and said, “Glory to God in the highest; peace on earth for God is blessing the humankind.”(Luke 2: 14) It is a song calling us to share joy between heaven and earth. It is a song of joy announcing that heaven is at hand.

4) The song of Simeon in the temple

Simeon was overwhelmed when he took the divine child in his hands. His memories of waiting poured in him. He began to mutter the melodies of farewell, “Nunc dimities, now the time has come, O Lord, you can dismiss your servant in peace.” His trembling lips warbled the words of maturity exposing the past, present and future of the expected child.

5) The proclamation of the children of Jerusalem

When Jesus entered Jerusalem as a triumphant king, the people and children gathered there were so much excited that they proclaimed the slogans of victory in unison, shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna, glory in the highest!”(Matthew 21: 9) It was a reminiscence of the never-ending song of angels in heaven, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord” (Rev.4: 8)

Let us sing a new song in His glory. “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.”(Psalm 40:4) Let us sing and enjoy the life on this earth in the glory of His name!
