At the break of a dawn I saw a child
At a subway side I used to walk
Frail and frazzled with eyes impairing
And hands outstretched in search of love!

Something moved me with a flash of thought
That forced my hand to dig in my bag
With a hope of finding some remnants
Of buried snacks in crumpled packs.

He saw the heaven, his face brightened,
As he devoured those sweet smelling crumbs.
The painful pangs of killing hunger
Seemed subdued, momentarily!

His hungry face is still haunting
Not sparing me a peaceful night
Day and night in tears he smiles
With a hope of moving my stingy heart!

I lay in bed in restless toss
Still in thought at subway cross
Looking at that helpless child
Who met me coming down from his Cross!

Was he Bethlehem’s swaddled baby?
Or was he Lazar in a childhood form?
Or a human reminder of million children
Who spend their nights in sleepless hunger?

Open sky with sun and stars
Roofed over this innocent child
Without a dwelling and caring hands
O God! Why did You keep him there?

Foxes have holes and birds of the air
Have nests to be safe and sleep without care;
But sons of men in millions have
Nowhere a place to lay their heads!

Something whispered in my innermost
Was it the voice of Bethlehem?
Or the cry of thirst at Calvary?
Or the call of ‘Judgment’ for the ‘little ones’?

Subways and alleys are still full of
Abandoned and thrown out human lives!
They wait for me with great reward
‘For a cup of cold water’ with a loving heart!
