Larry Lilly's Letter Monday November 1, 2010
A friend asked me the secret of staying married to the same person 46 years. I hadn't really thought about it other than the pat answers like we all hear, pray, pray and pray some more, along with loyalty, forgiveness simply enduring. Along with these accepted truths which are part of staying close to the Lord, Joyce, Known to our world as The Great Blonde and I have learned to laugh until we cry or our stomach hurts.
Dr. Tom Wallace has told a story for over 50 years of a man who got saved and immediately fell in love with the church soloist who was a gifted singer. She was so ugly her looks would stop an 8 day clock and often you could smell her breath five rows back. The morning after their wedding he awoke to her Quasimodo appearance, the musty tomb breath and begged, "Honey, for heaven's sake, sing."
One morning after a night of meeting with disgruntled church members and coming home and unloading on the bride of my youth, we finally went to sleep. When we awoke in the morning, I with dark circles under my eyes and back then my hair all over the place and my breath dragonesque, Joyce said, "Honey, for heaven's sake sing!"
We laughed all day. That night she thanked me for laughing instead of singing.
Solomon commented on the power of merriness, the ability to have an inner joy and see the humor in situations as is seen in Proverbs 17:22:
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
I am writing a book on the humor of our marriage though as Joyce said, "Ha, what a laugh that will be."
Young people taught me years ago that even David, when he was lamenting his mess due to the Uriah/Bathsheba event, showed me the subtle laughter within his serious penitent heart when one junior boy, who is now a serious preacher pointed out Psalm 6:6 in part:
"all the night make I my bed to swim."
I am not positing that sin is the root cause of bed wetting, but as the Bible is the inspired Word of God, a little chuckle now and then is good medicine and a good laugh helps to keep the bones from drying up.
I often hear preachers lamenting "The Christians of this age will be known as the Dry Eyed Ones." Could it be that a failure to laugh on occasion causes the bones to become dry which also dries out the tear glands? Could be.

Bro. Larry, greetings to you and the wife. Mary and I also have seized opportunities to laugh during our 49 years of marriage. Laughter is so wonderful, not when we laugh at someone, but rather with someone, or sometimes, at our self. You and your wife keep on laughing, and I'll keep on reading your posts and enjoying them. God bless.
