The Breath of Life

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living soul. - Genesis 2:7


The breath of life refers to the air that animals and humans breathe. It is the life from God that makes living possible on the earth. Just like man cannot live without blood so also man cannot live without the breath of life.

When God breathed into man, the breath created every organ, tissue, cell and system in man. When God created man`s body, he was just like a statue but as soon has He breathed his life into man, the man became alive. His human spirit and soul were formed, his blood was created and every other thing necessary for man to be alive was formed by the breath. It was the breath of life that produced oxygen. We breath in oxygen and it is very necessary for the life of man. It was created by God. But the breath of life is much more than ordinary oxygen. The breath of life ia not the spirit of man. It is also not the Holy Spirit. The Hebrew word for “breathed†in the scriptural reference is napah. The basic meaning of the word is to blow, to breathe, to sniff, and to gasp. The exact meaning of the word refers to the movement of air. Napah never refers to the spirit, the human spirit, or the Holy Spirit. The “breath of life†simply means that God blew into Adam’s nostrils, and God caused him to live. Napah describes what God did to Adam and ruah describes the air that Adam breathed. Hence, the breath of life refers to the life-giving air we breathe and not the human spirit. Without the air we breathe, we would die. God designed the air so that our bodies can breathe and live.


In the beginning, oxygen was very pure. It was 100% pure and mankind was very healthy. They lived long and attained maximum height before they died. Many of them were tall. Today, through medical science you can conduct an experiment with pure oxygen and feel what it feels like in you. If you take pure oxygen, you would feel lively and very healthy. More healthy than you are right now. It heals and regenerates some human conditions. Imagine, how much more a fresh breath of life from God would do to you if natural oxygen can do that to a man.
