Short Stories
It was a cold winter night. The harsh winds could be heard screaming at the top of their lungs. The blizzard was bizarre. Nothing could have withstood those chilly claws of icy frost. Deep in the heart of the warm cosy house of the Morgan¡¯s, he was sipping a cup of hot chocolate from a porcelain cup. One that he treasures so much that he only uses it for special occasions. She was sitting on the armchair happily building sandcastles in the air with eyelids shut.
He was fretting over the next¡¯s day interview with his new job. He knew he must not screw up this time. It had been months since he last got the chance to. He knew in his heart that his savings was running a little low but he kept assuring her that he still have enough to fend off poverty. With worries pounding in his head, he walked over and covered her with another extra sheet of blanket afraid that she might catch a cold. He kissed her forehead gently and whispered softly with words that could calm this monstrous stormy night. He slowly got back to the table and said a prayer or two hoping everything will fall into place.
As he was meddling with his thoughts, a knock on the door woke him up. He darted quickly to the door afraid that another knock will come and annoy his already half awaken wife. He opened it and saw a tall, well-built man with leather boots and a furry hood over his head with the snowstorm behind him. The man was shivering and pleaded to stay for the night as his car was broken down and in this bad weather this is as far as possible he could reach out for help. A chill went down his spine after looking at this ghastly figure. His presence was suspicious. His appearance was rather disturbing at this hour of the night. He recalled the murders and homicides that took place in this little town a few days ago where the perpetrator got away. He remembered how Mrs. Kelly described the suspect. He trailed his thoughts back to where Inspector Chung advised him to be alert at all times. Yet, there was something in him which questioned his thoughts.
What will Jesus do? Don¡¯t you remember the duties of a devoted parishioner? What if this man standing here is not what you think he is? What if he¡¯s telling the truth? Will your good in you let him freeze to death in this bitter cold night? With all the good he had in him, he mustered all his strength and welcomed this stranger into his home.
¡°Man found decapitated in own backyard¡± ¡ The headlines of the morning news sent shockwaves throughout town that fateful morning. He was devastated to find out that his caring neighbour, Billy was murdered last night. Billy was the most loving person he got to know. He baked cookies for his neighbours. He has the most cheerful smile wherever he goes which could brighten any rainy clouds in town. He took in some strays a couple of months back and nursed them back to health. He even lent him his garden rake three days back. He was a boy scout and would not even hurt a fly. How could something so horrifying happen to such a nice person?
Suddenly his thoughts struck at him, what could have happened if he had not let that stranger in? Won¡¯t that guy sitting at his dining table eating pancakes right now be in today¡¯s headlines? He was thankful for what he did. He was happy that Jesus was in him, that he managed to do what was right. Guess what? It turned out that the guy was his boss. His interview that morning was a shock and a pleasant one indeed. Not only did he got the job, he made a new friend as well.
