Larry Lilly's Letter Monday September 20, 2010

As a long time friend and I were talking he mentioned what can be called a "slither" attack on me. I discovered the article and two thoughts went through my mind; thoughts that comforted me.

First, I was thankful that I was not the attacker and also that over the course of my life and ministry I have helped many who were under attack rather than engaging in "slither" attacks, snakes "slither" but humans in the image of God walk upright.

Second, "slither" attacks tell more about the attacker than the one being attacked. To be the subject of any sort of attack can be, if properly understood, God's approval on your life for as Charles Haddon Spurgeon said:

"The devil never kicks a dead horse."

In spite of every sort of verbal onslaught, I am still alive! Praise the Lord.

In the long ago a prophecy of Jesus marked Him as one who was to be treated as dirt by His brethren. It is stated thusly in Isaiah 50:7:

For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

If you are serious about serving Christ rather than catering to the ideas of spiteful spiritual pygmies you soon learn the value of refusing to downgrade the work of others in foolish attempts to puff up your own comparative failures as grand achievements.

As did my Lord, I understand my calling, I will not be confounded, and my face is set as a flint toward accomplishing God’s purpose in my life and as the old song states and "I shall not be moved."

As you pursue God's will in your life, you will be confronted with all sorts of obstacles; it is then that you must continue in the known calling of Christ for you. It helps if you know that some saints are saintly and others "slither." Learn to trust Christ and keep walking toward your Jerusalem, with a song in your heart. After all it is Jesus who saves, satisfies and seals unto the day of redemption. Until then, embrace a kick.
