A Tender Love Affair
Song of Solomon, 3: 1 – 4
“By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loves. I sought him, but I found him not.
I will rise now and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him, but I found him not.
The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, “Did you see him my soul loves?”
I had not gone far from where I passed them that I found him whom my soul loves: I held him and would not let him go until I brought him into my mother’s house and into the chamber of her that conceived me.”
The Song of Solomon has been, for most of my life, a mystery to me. Oh, I see, I read, but it has seemed to be a lot of mushy-gushy love stuff which I found non-applicable to my life. Until…until, I was requested by my Pastor to preach on a particular Sunday morning.
As we ministers always do, I asked the Lord what He wanted to say. I did not like the subject to which I felt directed. For two weeks I wrestled with the idea and finally settled on a really good choice of mine. I prepared a good sermon. It is my practice to record my sermons as I am developing them. My really good sermon was absolutely dead. I finally said to the Lord, “O. K. I’ll preach what You want.” That text was Paul’s instructions to the Ephesians about husbands and wives. It was a touchy subject for me because I had for many years honored and practiced my part of this passage holding on to hope for my marriage to succeed. It failed.
I plowed into the text anyway and learned that Paul is using an analogy in this portion of Scripture: verse 32, “This is a great mystery (re: how 2 become 1) BUT I speak of Christ and the Church.” He goes on as if to say, ‘Yeh, yeh, let each of you do right by your husband and wife, but I’m talking about Christ and the Church.’ Now, I could embrace the text! It is about Jesus and me. It is about Jesus and each believer.
I confess that at the beginning I was a bit shy to consider “intimacy” with the Lord, but of course, the intimacy that He suggests is spiritual. However, it is even more real than the physical intimacy between husband and wife. It is certainly more stable and dependable.
I also discovered that the mushy-gushy expressions in the Song of Solomon are about relationship between the Lord and me, the Lord and you. He wants us to desire Him, He wants us to love Him. He wants to see that we will take action to diligently look for Him when we have wandered to some place outside His Presence.
The act of, “entering the chamber,” spoken of in The Song of Solomon, chapter 3, verse 4, is an act of very private and personal communion. God desires that with each of us. That time is the time during which He places within our spirit that which makes us one with Him in our daily activities. We know Him. He knows us.
We can no more ignore/deny this personal time with Him and remain in one mind with Him than we an avoid/ignore communication with a husband or wife and still remain intimately connected.
God has made most, if not all, our physical experiences to correlate, and to reflect, and to teach us, about spiritual truths and experiences.
Relationship with Him is beautiful and interestingly, mushy-gushy.
Proverbs 8: 17: The voice of Wisdom is speaking; “I love them that love me and those that seek me early, shall find me.” That is a promise that we will succeed in our search for Him and experience unity as one, with Him.
