Short Stories
Isaac
She stood looking into the darkness of the early morning, dazed by all the thoughts that were consuming her. Lost in her imagination of how it would be, how she would like it to be, and the tough reality of what it was.
The display of the new dawn’s colors woke her and captivated her into the dance of the new sunrise. For every ray that peeked from behind the hill, for every color that gave birth to another, hope began to well within her soul.
“He’s alive!! I never gave up believing. Although everything screamed at me that he was dead, I knew. My son!!!
Three weeks ago she received word from the Polish Embassy that her son was found to be among the survivors at Plaszow, a work camp in Poland, and today is the day that she is to be reunited with her son.
So many nights she re-lived that terrible day when her family was ripped apart. Moshe, her husband, dragged into a truck filled with men, her son, into another truck filled with children. Horror, terror and fear seized the faces and hearts of every man, woman and child. The nightmare!
Sarai prayed and hoped that one day she will be able to hold her son and husband once again. Moshe and Sarai found each other but no word of her son whereabouts. She refused to believe he was dead.
In the cool of the evening Sarai would pray and always end by embracing her son with her heart believing that he felt her love and hugs wherever he was. That became her only solace until the day she could hold him and fill her empty arms.
The train came to a slow screeching holt, and after what seemed like an eternity the doors opened and people poured out. Her eyes searched frantically for that little boy with the eyes of wonder and excitement. Sarai became overwhelmed with desperation and emotion. She felt weak as if all her strength was suddenly drained out of her, she cries “I can’t find him! I can’t see him! Where is he?”
Then a peace covered her like a warm soft blanket beckoning her to turn around. As she turned, her gaze fell upon the face of a very thin and frail young man. He raised his eyes and met hers she whispered, “There he is, my son.” That’s when she saw the eyes of wonder with a weak hint of excitement. That’s when she found her little boy. Her arms were no longer empty as her arms and heart embraced, Isaac.
Together they witnessed the dance of the new sunrise.
