Hebrews 12:1-3 says "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witness, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary or loose heart."
What is the race that the author of Hebrews is talking about? It is the race of the Christian life. Jesus teaches us the way to live, and we are to strive to live the life he teaches. No, we may never reach the perfection of Jesus, but each day we should strive to live the life he teaches us to live. The life that Jesus teaches us to live is contradictory to society. For example, Jesus tells us to not only love our neighbors, but also our enemies. Jesus teaches us to turn the other cheek, give our possessions to the poor, and that in order to be the greatest we must be a servant. These are not easy concepts to accept and/or live up to, but if we strive every day to run this race that Jesus has laid out before us we will no doubt finish the race someday and hear Jesus say "Well done good and faithful servant."
However, running the race is not always easy. In fact, many times it is difficult to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. When the stress of life gets to us, it is hard to run the race. When the bills pile up we ant to stop serving or giving. When our health goes down hill we don't feel like loving our enemy or turning the other cheek. We may fall during these times, but we must get up, fix our eyes on Jesus, and keep running because we know that Jesus has already won the victory for us; and we do not want to miss out on the celebration. Jesus endured the cross to ensure that we will cross the finish line, and now sits at the right hand of the Father cheer us on.
So, the next time the race gets hard, look to Jesus. He is there for you. He paid the ultimate price for you, so that you will not grow weary an loose heart. Jesus is our biggest fan in the race of the Christian life. So not matter what our circumstances are today let us fix our eyes on Jesus and RUN!
