Whose Driving Anyway?
By F. Wayne Mac Leod
I lifted her onto the back of my Honda 750. This was going to be one of those father/daughter moments. For the next hour or so my eight year old daughter and I were going to enjoy the wind and beautiful scenery in the countryside surrounding our town. I tightened the helmet on her head as tight as it would go and started the engine.
Leaving the driveway we headed down the street toward the next town. The familiar soon gave way to unfamiliar as we drove farther away from our home. Wondering how my daughter was responding to the new surroundings, I turned slightly and asked, "Do you know where you are?" The helmet shook slightly from side to side as she responded, "no." "Are you lost, then," I asked, continuing the conversation. The helmet shook again from left to right. "No, I'm not lost," she answered.
My adult mind was a bit curious about her logic. "If you don't know where you are," I asked, "why aren't you lost?" Without a moments hesitation she replied, "I'm not lost, because you're driving."
Her childlike logic was quite simple. As long as I was driving and knew where I was going she would never be lost. All she had to do was enjoy the ride and leave the driving to me.
I have to admit that there have been times in my life when I have felt lost. Overwhelmed with the stresses and decisions that come with adult life, I have often wondered where to turn or what hidden surprise might wait around the next corner. The childlike logic of my daughter is profound. It looks over to the person behind the wheel, is assured that He knows where He is going, and then sits back and enjoys the ride. There is nothing quite so simple.
I guess in my adult years, I have come to believe that, if I am going to make it in life, I have to take the wheel and be in control of my circumstances. That's what distinguishes me from a trusting child. You see, the trusting child knows she doesn't belong behind the wheel.
Childlike wisdom says, "as long as my heavenly Father is in control, I am safe. As long as He is driving, I will never lose my way. He will get me home safe." Have we lost sight of this simple logic? Have we taken the care of the world on ourselves? Have we asked our heavenly Father to take the back seat so we can navigate the road ourselves?
As an earthly father I would do everything in my power to get my daughter home safely. I'm convinced that this is the attitude of my heavenly Father as well, if only I would let him have the wheel.

Great article. I loved your comparison. "and a child shall lead them"...oh, that we would all become more childlike in trusting our heavenly Father at the wheel of life....GOD BLESS YOU
Wayne, this was a very good message. You had a good hook at the start and used your daughter's trusting comment to really make an excellent point. Well done. In His love, Deb
