Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday August 26, 2010

The web is untangling and I soon hope to put my book, "Lasting Friendship In 30 Days" into paperback, thus reducing the cost plus a few changes for the better. The book has been well received by the public with Mom remarking that it is the best book she has ever read. Mom has read all of Frank Morris Spillane's novels, so you know she is on good ground to make such a statement.

Kenn Gividen offered a quote from my book on his Facebook page last week, thus my feeling that there is still a graving for the quintessential wisdom within the pages.

While musing around the other morning a saying from Albert Camus broke through the fog and it is a truth about the value and style of friendship:

"Don't walk behind me; I may not lead. Don't walk in front of me; I may not follow. Just walk beside me and be my friend."

Christ is often portrayed as walking alongside and His definition of the Holy Spirit, Parakletos, translated as Comforter in John 14:16 and the very word means, "One called alongside to help" showing the people, humans, men, women even children need someone alongside to walk with them along the rough road of life.

This truth about our Friend, Jesus, is demonstrated in the manner in which a man and his wife walk in Christendom. In Christ we walk side by side, shoulder to shoulder noting that we are in this together with Jesus and though unseen He is "With us."

Many other cultures are like the five humans I saw in a large mall the other day. These folks were obviously from a different culture and though they seemed happy, they were totally disrespectful of our culture as the man walked ten paces ahead of what appeared to be half of his allowed four wives trailing along behind pushing a stroller. The man marched along as a conquering general leading his slaves behind. I wondered, "Whatever happened to guests acquiescing to the host?"

Christians are told that our citizenship is of another country and we live as much as possible with the social mores of that city, paying due respect to the country where we physically abide while awaiting transfer to the city of our longing.
