In Genesis 11 the survivors of the flood who didn’t worship Jehovah settled in the land of Shinar. There they proposed to build a city and a tower that would make themselves famous and powerful. As they started this project, the LORD intervened to keep them from controlling the world. The Almighty changed their language, resulting in confusion and the failure of their plans. People with the same languages grouped together and formed nations around the earth.

The Christian Church is built on the Rock of Jesus Christ (1 Pet. 2:8 ), He is the foundation (1 Cor. 3:11 ) and we are the ‘living stones” 1 Pet. 2:5 that make up the building. The Holy Spirit is the Leader in this endeavor (1 Cor. 12: 11). Believers have been commissioned to go into all the world and make disciples of everyone (Matt 28:18-20). Jesus is the Foundation for a great building of love that should tower over the whole world displaying His obedience, His self-sacrifice, His compassion and His mercy. It should reach to heaven and bring the blessings and glory of the Most High to the helpless and the hopeless on this sin weary world.

The early church started out in a wonderful manner building on the Rock and affecting the downfall of the Roman Empire. But then the devil came down and offered the church worldly acceptance and recognition. Everywhere he sowed pettiness, selfishness, pride and hardness of heart. Eventually the builders split into segments of “believers” around the world who refuse to acknowledge each other or work together for the saving of souls, sometimes even fighting and killing each other. Every time there are unyielding differences, “Christians” split and refuse to follow the Masters way, making more divisions and confusion. It is like a Babel of voices, all claiming to be correct, yet without the heart of God.

Christ gave His followers only 1 new Commandment with this Covenant, it was to “love one another; as I have love you…by this all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” John 14: 34-35 NKJV. Sadly, Christians have done no better at following their 1 Commandment than the Jews were at obeying the 10 Commandments – Christians have failed miserably. So today we have Adventists, Anglicans, Baptists, Catholics, Church of Christ, Church of God, Greek Orthodox, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Latter-Day Saints, Lutherans, Methodists, Pentecostals and Presbyterians – how few of these work together in the love of Christ to exalt His cause? Wikipedia says there may be 38,000 Christian denominations! Yet this is all He asked us to do – “love one another…by this all will know that you are my disciples.”

But because His followers won’t follow they mar the holy temple Christ desires to have on earth to draw sinners to Him. By refusing to submit to the guiding of the Holy Spirit, they crucify Christ afresh. Like the ruins of Solomon’s Temple as they lay scattered about, so modern Christianity testifies to the disobedience of God’s people as they refuse to work in brotherly love to achieve His goal of liberating planet earth.
