And You Were There



I run swiftly from place to place
Desiring mightily to escape your face
I scamper, I dash, going far and wide
To find a spot you do not reside

I scaled the highest peak
I descended to the lowest depths
I hastened to the north and to the south
And to the east and to the west

And in every place you were there

I turned to drink and song
And bad company
To the harlot and the thief
Hoping you would flee

But again, you were there

I devised then a plan
I would wipe you from memory
Treating you as a cruel delusion
And your existence mere fantasy

Surely now you would disappear
As the way of all lore
Never enticing me again
Calling me no more

And yet, remarkably, you were still there

So I cursed your name
Long, loud, and clear
Shouting with great fervour
For you to depart from here

Still, you were there

So I implored you in tears
Asking why you remained
And you said “ My child
Please let me explain

When I said I’d not let you go
I meant every word
You belong to me
Even in rebellion and hurt

My love is enduring
My forgiveness is sure
You are my precious child
Forever, for good
