Poetry
My beloved
Someday in my earthly surjourn
And earlier than you e’er wished or imagined
I shall cross those vast oceans and seasons
That have kept you so far from me.
Looking ahead gives me the joy of dawn
Joy as fresh as the oriental sun
That feeds the dawn with golden rays of hope
Which make the damp lilies gasp for more
Beloved I’ ll dare to tell you something
Though very difficult to weave within
It shall flow unhindered from my heart
To give you that warmth of sunset
That will flush away your fears and desperation
Not until we reach that distant shore
That tent where your love is hidden and preserved
Which no rival shall ever fathom or unravel
You may still be to me like a puzzling dream
At that garden you tend with great care
I’ll break through the strong gates of dusk
Stride the path, which leads to your heart
To inhale the rich fragrance of those bloomy petals
Which you have groomed in your heart for me
Then you will know how much I care for you
Yeah! How strong my heart longs for you
That true love endures forever
And withstands the threat of deception and lust
Together we shall cherish the Lord
Who made and bound us as one-in-Him.
(Enugu, 1997)
WHO ART THOU?
(For Buchi)
Daughter of the most high, the fair one
Why pull my heart from across the oceans;
Past the rivers, valleys and sand dunes
That have shielded us apart for too long?
You seem not to know that your kindness;
Those loving thoughts of your heart
Have kept me wondering within my bowels
‘’Art thou the one sent from heaven,
Or do I expect yet another?’’
Your kindness from the cold, glassy land,
The vigor with which you run my errands
The concern you ‘ ve so shown in my well being
The part you’ve thus rehearsed in my destiny plot
All have kept my eyelids batted
Peering deep into the future template
To know truly if thou art the princess
That I courted in the cloggy waters of the womb
I do rest in peace, as your tent is beyond the shores
Far off from my view, yet closer to my heart,
than the strings of kinsfolk
Which glows with each word from you
Ferried from distant lands by e-mail couriers
My brush is dripping with the oil of love
To trace the strokes of your heart
O Hephzibah! The delight some and fair one
“Art thou the princess adorned for me?”
Graceful as the dove, yet fervent as the flame
Gentle as the lamb, yet awesome as the angel
Only if thou will allow me paint
Your picture on the canvas of heaven
While you watch without a veil
To see deep into my heart
Which now doth in thee delight!

MY LIFE MY LOVE
(An ode to God)
Lost in my dreams,
I saw you waiting
To loan me back to life
I thought I would rouse on my own
But failed with no hope to live again
Till you came around
And revived me back to life
I am stuck with you for life
We’re hooked and hooked for life.
LIKE A MIST
Your love comes on fresh every morn
Like the dew that refreshes the lawns
It comes on gently like the mist
Which calms my soul every morn
Like a mist your love comes daily
Neither delayed nor detained in its descent
To flush out the staleness of yesterday
Till the meadows have drank
Their fill of heaven’s dew
Your love comes on strong every morn
More refreshing than the sweet breeze
More soothing than a touch so gentle
More tender than the stroke of tender grass
Yet so strong and mightier than all.
O lord, in your love will I trust all day
When I recline in sleep or keep a vigil
Thro’ the furnaces I must visit in life
For I know you’ll always accompany me
As I work, walk and wait for you
ENTHRALLED
Let the world know that I love you
Let them know that you enthrall me, my lord
May they feel the waves, the billows, and the flow
And the palpitations in my heart
As I contemplate your love for me
The love that took you so far away
From the pleasure and the fame of divinity
To the gruesome death on the cross
For sure your love has enthralled me
Now I am pulled to your heart
And drawn away from sin and its pull
NOT A LONER
Ever since I met you lord
I have had no reason to look back
For long before you accepted me
I was trapped within myself
Unsure of what life held for me.
Then you stepped into my path
I was touched, truly transformed
My life was changed forever
You’ve change my person ,my mentality
And your breath of life has teased me.
When I look back to my past
And recall the very first time
Your love confronted me, I shudder!
For you came down so low
To raise me up so high.
Your words have given me assurance
Those sweet sounds escort me daily
As I trace my way around
They comfort me when despair stirs up
And soothe me against every disappointment
I can’t stop wondering why
You just love me this way
No other has shown me this kind
Which you’ve made me savour fully
This I love, but do love you much more.
AN ECHO
I wrote a verse for you
But you kept the rhymes in your heart
I sang a ballad for you
But you danced along only in your heart
I played the flute for you
But you whistled the note under your breath
If you were a poetess
I would a verse share
If you had the ruse as mate
I would a stanza harvest in you
But no ode have I read from you
Nor a bouquet received thro’ couriers.
Yet I know the colour of love
Bedecked with the hues of the rain bow
Which forms a coating over my heart
And the echo resounds in symphony
With the verse I just wrote for you.

HEART MURMURS
I need a heart to hold
I need a soul to mould
I need a life to build
Like a blossom in need of sunshine
There is a yearning within me
One stronger than the grips of hunger
And more potent than passion
Which makes my heart walk unsteadily
Lord, I need someone to love
With no reservations to cling to
Nor excuses to hold me back
And no wrinkles to straighten out
My heart is sick of aloneness
In the midst of bloomy roses
And in disbelief, my anxious companions
Watch this prince who struts around
In feigned monk hood of dark ages
While the land is bereft of monastries
Dear lord, I need someone to love
I need a love for this life
I need a life of love
Someone to love me in spite of me
Who’s there to hear this murmurs?
Who’ll quieten this sick heart of mine?
Where’s that balm of love I heard of?
Will it ever soothe this gapping hole within?

MEMOIRS
When we first met
My eyes blinked
My heart rose like
A fiery wave
Which sent streams thro’ me
All because I met you.
When we first met
Your light flashed by
Your echoes sounded differently
But fear stunned me
And I took a flight
For fear of knowing you
Then from a distance
I sent soundings unto you
But no scales could fathom your depth
None could track your path
Like a forgotten dream, we me at last
So close not to be avoided again
Then I reckoned and knew
That you’re of a different stalk
Like I thought you were
But it was a belated confabulation
For you then took a sudden flight
Which no soundings could detect
Nor a herald find the scrolled map
Which traced your foot steps
As they receded from my heart.

ACT AND SCENES
Can I let this pass by?
This scene created by angels
As they saw us walk past
To the garden of blooms
Hand-in-hand, heart-to-heart
We crusied round the beach
The washed saad tease our feet
And share in the stirred joy
Which bubbles all over us
The smiles, the stares
The sounds of silence
The thuds in my heart
Which resonate within you
How long will this waiting be
For the acts to be hatched
Into the scenes of life
While I watch still from afar?

HER ROYAL FAIRNESS
She is all beauty and fairness
A work of sublime finesse
That sautered thro’ the courts of heaven
For a queen she has been for ages
And her grace, the angels have envied.
From the earth I looked up
And saw how the angel watched
Over this queen that should rule earth
I thus longed for my a peep into heaven
Wishing the queen would descend
To dole out her signet ring to me
All hail the queen her royal fairness
Let thy kingdom be for a lifetime
And may the crown not rust
Till on your head it abides forever
Then maidens shall on thee wait
And for thee the gazelles shall dance
The heats of your royal drums
How would your subjects on earth
Scale the chasm to reach you?
How would they beat the downstream currents
That encircles and guards your throne
Would you not let them kiss your hands
And pay you the due obeisance?
Would you deny them even these:
The ecstasy of your coronation
The glittering eyes of your crown
The gifts of royal diadems
And gold saved in the vault of vassals
All hail her majesty the royal fairness
May we all know peace to the fullest
Till your kingdom on earth be pitched
As it has always been in the galaxies.

SONG OF THE BELOVED
Sing to me a song, oh my beloved
A song none has heard before
Sing to me your love song, my princess
Let my ears be enthused by your notes
Sing to me song of song
The song brewed in the chambers within
To make my soul retrace its steps
From this far journey in search of you
Will you not dance my beloved
To the rhythms of this song of grace
Which the moon taught me last night?
Let us dance along to the alter
In company of poets and pipers
To the delight of angels and by standers
Teach me your secret song oh beloved
Let me swing to the beats of true love
Sing to me your song of love, my angel
In this life till when light fades.

SONG OF THE BELOVED
Sing to me a song, my beloved
A song none has heard before
Sing your love song, O my beloved
Let my ears be enthused by your notes
Sing to me the song of love that song brewed in the chambers within
To make my soul retrace its steps
From this far-journey in search of you
Will you not dance my beloved?
To the rhythms of this song
Which the moon taught me last night?
Let us dance along to the altar
In company of poets and pipers
To the delight of bystanders.
Teach me your secret song, O my beloved
Let me swing to the beats of true love
Sing to me your song, my beloved
Let my heat dance to your delight
In this life, and when life ebbs
Till light fades out of this enclave
A ROSE IN THE BLOOM
(For Olubanke)
Blessed is the garden that nursed you
Hallowed is the nursery that weaned you
Great is the hand that crafted you
Awesome is the power that fashioned you
Roses I have seen in gardens so great
Their blooms so full of beauty and splendour
But they lose their fragrance like fad, so fast
Stale with nectars so cast within your frame
One that shines with glamour so brilliant
Let this virtue in you stay on, untainted
Cause this beauty to adorn castles
A glow so burnished as of a furnace
All these and more have I seen in you
Oh Princess weaned at the western coast of the Niger.
YESTERDAY
Do you belong to my yesterday?
The life that has been frazzled
And entombed with the remains of my past?
This has not been the wish of my life
Nor the path I thought I saw at first.
Now I seem t see shadows around
They fight to engulf you out of my sight
With clouts stretched forth like talons
To pull you back to the path of my past
Where I cast of the slough of daydreams
I have an electrifying dream
Whose light is fiery as the torches of dawn,
That flashe through the cares of the past
Breaking the veil of my future
You may chooses to stand at the door post
And peer deep into the cast heavens
Watching me walk the aile of life alone
Without you by my side to hold
Yet no bruise will I nurse
Nor a hurt cover with a slave
Do you belong to my yesterday’s life?
Where we meant to meet and part!
But I wish it were not so with you
For when we met yesterday
The dawn smiled into our today
While the laughter waded into our morrow
Flashing thro’ dusk brilliance
My morrow shall not be doomed
Nor I miss the sweet dreams of youth
For swim I will in the oasis
Which will bear me pass
My yesterday
To that island where
Princes propped my throne
SILENCE OF THE STARS
There were things in you I saw
Which got me reeling in admiration
And like a silent worshipper in the dark
I kept the rituals far from your sight
From a distance I’ve watched
Your devotion to the owe I adore
And the Passion for the sacred scrolls
So I dreamed to crown you as my queen
But how do I put the diadems on you
When you still are quiet, keeping no vigil
And lost in the shadows of my dreams?
Yet my heart waits anxiously for the herald
Glued to the tarmac to your heart, I stand
Not sure would take any detours
Somehow none gets deep into my heart like you
Each time their songs beckon, I hear nothing
The scene fades, the light blinks, the cheerio reigns
And the void in my heart sags the more
Then all alone I stand on the podium of life
Wondering if this will last a lifetime
Can’t you save this malaise, Oh princess?
And put a salve over my hurting heart
Must my heart fly along with the stars
To reach you at the high heavens
Where you’ve pitched your throne for atime
Watching you still, waiting still
That your voice will clatter
And break this silence of the stars
That have watched and waited on you
For a time they’ll twinkle in joy.

THE DANCE
I drank the sun’s rays
But they did not hurt me
I looked deep into her fiery eyes
But was not blindened
I watched her smile at me
As she danced and wriggled
until the trees canopied her
leaving behind the shades of gold
while the twilight watchers in wonder
Savoured the grace in her stride.
YOUR EYES
Like a piercing light
Your eyes look deep into my heart
To search out the estate within
In the midst of cares and challenges
That the world had sold to me
As the piercing into me
They search out my areas of need
How they relay the softness of your heart
To release the comfort stored in you
Your eyes so special are they
Some eyes may be blank and cold
Many may stare in awe
But yours will always relay
The message of hope and comfort
That you’ll always be there
To show that you really cared
THE FRAGRANCE OF LOVE
If the world would learn to forgive
If all would bear with another’s faults
If we can just swallow the hurts and pains
Then can we have a glimpse of love?
If sworn enemies would live as friends
If we can shoulder burdens not ours
If we can let our differences unite us
Then can we savour the rich fragrance of love?

DRUM BEATS
The ropes are that]
And all I feel
Is the ranting and
The beats of your soul
I will add my words3
To the rhythms of your heart
Words that you never
Have heard before
I will not leave you
Shattered or embittered
But better that you were
Before my heart met yours
This drum is within me
And this rhythm goes
Beyond the confines of
The mundance to anchor
Deep in your heart
I will love you with my life
And your world I‘ll adorn
With the flowers of heaven
And the treasures of the garden
Which I have kept for you
