Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday July 6, 2010

I received several notes concerning my mention of Coach Mel Masonheimer a few weeks ago and this one from Mary Ann, then, Morgan touched me as I again remembered Coach.

"As always, enjoyed your daily letters, but particularly the one about Mel Masonheimer. I remember him well. We "girls" taking PE in one side of the gym, while the boys were on the other, were of course most interested in those cute athletes across the gym floor. Well I can assure you they were "Mel's" guys, and he really didn't want any cute attractions disturbing them. Our PE teacher Mrs. Hill was a little more tolerant. It is great having someone to share those bygone memories with. It was a good time of life, even though I'm not sure I realized it then as much as now. God Bless, Mary Ann.
P.S. Maturity, so to speak, now reminds me to enjoy each minute of each day, as future memories unfold."

The Post Script leaped off the page and I want to comment on Mary Ann's insight on the memories of the past and the anticipation of future precious gems.

Mary mentioned the divided gym and I don't know if she recalls the large net-curtain used as the divider, but the guys thought that was there to protect us from the rather wild girls in the gym class. I wonder where I would be if Rose's Diner had used a net of sorts to protect this customer from a certain teen waitress.

Life usually has no visible protective nets, but God's Words does clearly lay out guidelines for living life to its fullest without regret. I often counsel others who have too many regrets to search for the good lesson. I personally spend too much time in the slough of despond due to actions of yesterday or long ago that bring regrets. I have to practice what I preach and find the "good lesson."

"Future memories" are unfolding before you and me today. Whether they are precious or painful depends to a large degree on what we learn from them. Romans 8:28 assures us that they can, when properly understood, be precious.
