WALKING ON THE SEA

Some years ago, a Hindu mystic heard that Jesus had walked on the sea. He dismissed it as something of little consequence. He said that given the right conditions, even he could do it. It was just a matter of mind over matter. When challenged, he said that he would prove it. An auspicious day was chosen, the media was called and a huge crowd gathered to witness the miracle. They waited with bated breath, their cameras ready and the newspaper men had their pens poised. There was silence as the great man approached. He walked slowly and with great dignity to the edge of the pool. There, he paused for dramatic effect. The spectators leaned forward and craned their necks. This was going to be a historic event.

The mystic placed one foot on the water, lost his balance, fell into the pool and proceeded to thrash about wildly. Then he sank into the water and had to be helped out.

Yes, a man did walk on the sea beside Jesus (Matthew 14:29). When Jesus walked on the stormy sea towards the disciples’ ship and told them who he was, Peter asked him if he could go to him. Jesus said, “come,” and Peter got out of the ship and walked on the sea to go to him. As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was safe: but the wind and the waves around distracted him, he began to be afraid. He took his eyes away from Jesus and began to sink. Then he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Immediately, Jesus stretched out his hand, caught him and said to him,” O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?”(Matthew 14:30)

The stormy sea is the world, full of trouble and strife. Too often, we are mired in difficulty and we forget that there is a way out. We cannot overcome problems on our own. We will only sink deeper because we have taken our eyes away from Jesus. All we have to do is to call out to him. He is ever ready to help, because he is a great and merciful God. We are the apples of his eye and he is always looking out for us. Too often, we are so deep in trouble that we fall into depression. We forget that there is a savior, who gave his life on the cross for us, to save us. We take our eyes away from Jesus. Unlike Peter, we should not give him cause to say,”O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” Reach out to Jesus and he will take you by the hand and pull you out of your trouble.

Our problems are just a stormy sea which will swallow us if we give in. Remember that trouble is just Satan’s way of distracting us from our road to salvation. He loves people who sink into self pity and depression. We should not give him that satisfaction. Jesus has given us the weapons to fight back and he is ever by our side.

We can walk on our troubles just as Jesus walked on the stormy sea with Jesus by our side.
