This is an incident that was recounted to me by a former major in the Indian Army, who later became an evangelist for Christ. This true story was responsible for my turning to Jesus and accepting Him as my Lord and saviour.

I had been adrift in the world slowly but surely on my way to hell, when I was cornered by this evangelist and two of his friends who began to tell me all about their lives and experiences as believers. At first, I was not interested and sought to get away from them as soon as possible, but something in the way they spoke, compelled me to listen.

Major Colaco, popularly known as “Major” had taken part in the Indo-Pakistan war of 1972. He was posted to the Siachen Glacier, on the Himalayas, in Northern India. His base was high up in the mountains and his duty was to keep an eye on the Pakistani base which was on the ridge across a deep valley.

One evening, Major decided to ride up to the ridge to see how his men were faring out in the bitter cold. It had been snowing and the snow lay soft on the ground and his horse found the going difficult. It was a good distance to the ridge and to the place where his men were on guard. Major had decided against informing his junior officer about his ride as he would insist on going along. Major had wished to be alone with his thoughts. He reached the ridge and dismounted, letting the reins trail on the ground. He saw a flash on the ridge opposite the one on which he was standing, and the next instant, he felt a blow on his chest.

When Major awoke, he found himself lying, buried in a snowdrift. It was bitterly cold and the horse was nowhere to be found. He tried to get to his feet, but the pain in his chest was too intense and he sank back into the snowdrift. He forgot how long he lay there. Then he tried to crawl in the direction of his base, but was soon exhausted. He now realized his predicament. No one in the camp knew where he was. To make matters worse it started snowing again. Whatever tracks his horse had left would be wiped out. Moreover, darkness had fallen. Major felt that his time had come to die.

“Lord Jesus, help me. Don’t let me die. Forgive my sins.” He prayed. He felt himself drifting off to sleep. He realized that this was risky but he could not help himself. He drifted in and out of consciousness.

When he opened his eyes again, he felt a movement near him and saw an old man with a pony. The old man raised him to his feet and helped him to the pony. Then with superhuman strength, he lifted him on to the pony’s back. In silence, he led the pony back to the base and left him at the sentry’s post. The sentry soon found him and carried him to the base hospital. When asked, the sentry told him that he had seen no one else. Where did the old man come from? There was no village for miles around. How did he find him in the wilderness? What was he doing in such a place? Major found no answers to his question.

Major’s firm belief is that God had answered his prayer and had sent an angel to help him.

“Call unto Me, and I will answer” (Jeremiah 33:3)

After his discharge, Major Colaco accepted Jesus as his personal saviour and became an evangelist.
