Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday June 30, 2010
Wisdom is where you find it and for I have discovered that life wisdom is rooted in the Bible and this wisdom found in the pages of Holy Writ will wind its way to other expressions meaning the same thing. Such is the case in today's chosen quote.
"We immediately become more effective when we decide to change ourselves rather than asking things to change for us."
Successful author/speaker Stephen Covey wrote the above and he is right on. The history of the human race is stacked with the accounts of men, women and even children who overcome enormous odds as a result of an inner change of heart, mind or attitude; usually the change of all three makes the most difference.
It is unlikely that the weather will change, so we must change at the very least our attitude about the weather. Sometimes we can change our location and thus get a change in the weather. Or, we can choose to live in Indiana where the weather usually changes five times a day thus making most happy for a least a little while each day.
While deciding to change ourselves is an admirable thought, I find it more likely that the Lord will make a change in my life when I am saturated with His Word and receptive to Christ's leading and depend on the power of the Holy Spirit.
While I acknowledge the miserable financial condition of our nation, and I join the millions who are praying for change, I also know that I must obey the scripture and adjust my thinking about money, lifestyle and fully grasp the truth that "Wishing don't make it so" and get with an organized totally disciplined program to control spending in my own life and in the ministry. As pastor I must implement the same practice in the area of church. I am making a statement that will certainly draw fire, but as a pastor for the most part of the last 48 years, I have observed that the people who demand the most costly "ministry" are folks who give the least of their time, talent and treasure. Men, women and children who are walking with Jesus seem to have an inner satisfaction with Him.
This deep inner satisfaction involved a change of mind, heart and attitude within themselves as to just what really matters. Ah, since Jesus came into my heart.
