Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday June 29, 2010

Over the last 48 years I have been surprised daily at how often unlikely people know and use biblical truth often without having any idea that the thoughts they express and implement are in fact biblical truth. Take the for example:

"There are only two options regarding commitment. You're either in or out. There's no such thing as life in-between."

The Great Blonde heard me stating the above phrase to myself and in her wisdom said, "Larry, remember a lot of people are truly committed to apathy." Surely you believe the Lord has given the gift of patience to a certain clergyman.

Today's quote comes from the heart of NBA coaching legend Pat Riley. Love him or hate him, he is dead right in his summation of the life that counts, at least in the realm of time. I assure you commitment does not count any less in eternity's realm.

Commitment is the difference in cases of men or women with equal talent and in many cases commitment wins the day over more talent and less commitment. George Burns noted this when he commented, "No wonder we are in such a mess, all the men who know how to run the country are working as plumbers and taxi drivers."

At least a modicum of wisdom from George.

Jesus told us that along with the apostasy of the last days, one serious characteristic of the days would be/is, a lack of commitment on the part of the shallow believers of this era. We often speak of "Good Lord good devil, good for nothing believers." Pat Riley spoke of the same though in different words, "There's no such thing as life in-between"

Jesus addressed the subject thusly in Revelation 3:14-16:

"And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth."
