THE PAGAN EVANGELIST
To the leaders of the city he said, “Behold the Man!” thus bringing His excellence to the attention of anyone who would listen – he was like an evangelist!
Previously he had told the assembly, “I find no fault in Him,” after asking Christ probing questions. He sincerely believed in His goodness – he was like a promoter.
Pilate marveled that Christ was so calm while his enemies made such vicious accusations – Jesus peaceful demeanor spoke with power and eloquence.
It wasn’t what Jesus said, it was what He didn’t say. No angry self-defense, no accusations and no irate arguments – just calm assurance.
Yes, realizing the Pharisees had brought Jesus because they were envious, Pilate, the top government official in Israel – tried to persuade the crowd to accept Christ.
This unbeliever tried to save the Savior, but he failed for one simple reason. Though he was a judge, he wouldn’t do the right thing and free the innocent Man.
We all have that choice in life to do what is right or do what is wrong. And like Pilate, anytime we do what is wrong we crucify Christ…
Pilate was the top judge, but he didn’t follow the law. He condemned a man he knew was innocent. His job was more important than doing the right thing.
Pilate didn’t want to crucify Jesus, but it wasn’t a big deal to him to sacrifice an innocent man to please the crowd. He freed a murderer and murdered a free man.
Only Christianity values the individual, all other religions count one person as nothing. But Jesus said if you do it to one of His, you do it to Him…wow!
Pilate knew the right thing to do, and he told everyone else the correct action, but when it was crunch time, he wouldn’t carry out his own verdict.
