Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday June 22, 2010
One of my favorite recitations is "The Touch Of The Master's Hand." I'm sure you have heard it on occasion. One line states, "And the foolish crowd can never understand the change that's wrought by the touch of the Master's hand."
During the last couple of weeks I have talked with several people who happen to be involved different Christian persuasions and in the course of the conversations I have attempted to steer the exchange away from the peculiarities of each group toward mine, as my group has no weird peculiarities.
One theme did keep ringing the bell and that was the simple truth that a true experience with Christ does effect change in the recipient's life. Sometimes the change is as quick and dramatic as was the change in the outward appearance and inner demeanor of the maniacal man who lived in a graveyard yet was delivered by Jesus ordering a legion of demons to leave him. On other folks the change, while judicially instant, takes time and growth, but working change it most surely does.
Jesus healed a blind man one time and strange thing about this partial healing is stated in Mark 8:24:
"And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking."
I do not claim to know all that is being taught here, but I have an idea that most of what I read from the learned ones is poppycock. Here the physical is a metaphor of the spiritual and myriads of men and women do NOT see people as they are but merely objects to be used. Jesus put His hand again upon the man's eyes and he then could see clearly.
A vast percentage of Christians really need another touch from the Lord in that we refuse to see men as they are. We use our own terms and some Bible ones in vain attempts to adequately define men and women, but in fact men and women are lost. Because they are lost, they are biblically said to be of such value to God, stating that God "so" loved that He gave His ONLY BEGOTTEN SON as the price for their salvation. I have no words to define the word in John 3:16, "so." Searched have I, and I find no commentary dug from the depth, heights or breadth, sufficient.
When we Christians get the "clear vision touch," we then see in every human the great potential for God's Kingdom through Christ. Redemption makes the difference. And this redemption will result in a changed view concerning life, and the value thereof.
