“… David had served God’s purpose in his own generation…” –Acts 13:36 NIV-

I'm recalling in my mind this beautiful Greek Orthodox church building in Melbourne opposite where we used to hold our Sunday services. Every weekend we’d always see them holding either a wedding or a funeral, celebrating the beginning of a new life or mourning the end of one. And every time I saw them, I'd always be reminded that life begins and life ends.
But that’s not all.
I’d also be reminded that in between these two, whether we like it or not, LIFE HAPPENS.
(And those who’d rather believe that “life sucks and poop happens” have not truly known the Giver of Life).

There are a few things that we have no control over (as much as we sometimes wish we do): when we enter into life and when we leave, the families we’re born into (our family didn’t exactly get to choose who to share their DNA with either, so stop complaining), the way we look (so wear a little makeup and get some exercise), our natural talents, etc.
Thankfully, though, we do get to choose the way we live our lives. This LIFE that God gave is meant to be LIVED and meant to be lived BOLDLY. Sadly, we allow things, which I call Life-Stallers, to hold us back and give up on this life too easily.

Broken relationships. Feeling stuck doing something we don’t enjoy. Family’s not supportive enough. School is too tough. No money. Cultures. Traditions. “What would people say?” Not talented enough. Our personalities. “What if?” “Why?”
Most of the above can be summed up in one word: SELF - the most viral Life-Staller that most often gets in the way of fulfilling our life’s purpose and most difficult to deal with.

Instead of living to please the Source of our dreams, we seek to please the people we love and the approval of our peers.
Instead of responding with love and wisdom and proving ourselves to be living testimonies, our pride pushes us to rebel and to prove the world wrong.
Instead of influencing culture and changing traditions, culture and tradition influence our mindset and discourage us from doing what has never been done before.
Instead of moving forward with the vision God has given us, we stay on the spot and look back at what God has said “No” to.
Instead of guarding our own portion and inheritance in the land God has given us, we waste time and opportunities in coveting what are not ours.

Instead of seeking God’s will for our lives and daring to pay the price for our dreams, we ask God for His opinions and then choose the easy way out.
Instead of believing in God with a faith that moves mountains, we either blame the mountain for placing itself in our way or fear the size of it and turn back.
Instead of being a history maker, we’d rather be... normal.

I don’t know what lies on the other side of my mountain, but I do know that there’s “a fire shut up in my bones” unless I do what God has called me to do. 30 years ago, my life began. In ‘x number’ of years later, my life will end. In the meantime, life happens and I want to live for what really matters.
