Kids & Parenting
(note: Though this was originally written for our yet-to-be-born daughter and meant for her eyes only when she's in her teens, I felt led to publish these letters and dedicate them to all girls out there, all parents and parents-to-be)
"For You did form my inward parts; You did knit me together in my mother's womb.
I will confess and praise You for You are fearful and wonderful and for the awful wonder of my birth! Wonderful are Your works, and that my inner self knows right well.
My frame was not hidden from You when I was being formed in secret [and] intricately and curiously wrought [as if embroidered with various colors] in the depths of the earth [a region of darkness and mystery].
Your eyes saw my unformed substance, and in Your book all the days [of my life] were written before ever they took shape, when as yet there was none of them.
How precious and weighty also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
If I could count them, they would be more in number than the sand. When I awoke, [could I count to the end] I would still be with You."
[psalm 139: 13 – 18]
Dear Matilda Grace,
You are beautiful, inside and out.
You are strong, yet possess a feminine grace that your future husband will find undeniably attractive about you.
You are loved…
… not because of the many things you can do, so there is no point in striving to do things that are not your portion.
… not because of who you wish you are, so there is no need to try to be someone you’re not.
… not because of the great things you’ve been called to do, so don’t uproot the tree before it’s fully grown. Great things come to those who wait.
We love you…
… because of WHOSE you are: God’s precious gift to us.
… entrusted to us so we can raise you to be a powerful part of a generation that will run the race and finish well.
… to leave in you a heritage of unconditional love and uncompromising righteousness.
… and to us, there is no higher honor and no greater joy.
Today as you read this, you may be happy and excited, or sad and confused. But really, sweetheart, the condition and the circumstances don’t matter. What really matters are who is always with you to carry you through and the people that He has put in your life to love you through it all.
Love,
Your very blessed parents
