Rooted and Built up
While planting flowers recently I began to think of the verse in Colossians 2:7 that states: Rooted and built up in him and stablished in the faith. The Greek word for Rooted is Rhizoo, which means to cause to strike root, to strengthen with roots, to render firm. Scripture often uses plants to teach spiritual truths. Those lovely purple Petunias needed to be planted deep enough so that they will grow properly. They also need oxygen, water, and sunlight. All these things together contribute to the growth of the flowers. Soon they will spread their beauty and there will be many more lovely Petunias that bring the beauty of God’s creation to our sometimes drab lives. Looking closely at each flower one can see intricate details that only God could create. Heaven must be far more beautiful than earth if there are lovely flowers and grass like we have on earth.
If flowers need to be rooted and built up to grow properly, so do believers. We need to be rooted and grounded in Christ and his word. But how you may ask? Spending time with Christ in prayer and studying his word help us to get our spiritual roots planted deep in Christ. The deeper the roots the stronger the plants or flowers will be. Those small Petunias will soon be more beautiful with all the nourishment they will receive having their roots planted deep in the earth. May it be so for us as well. That makes a great prayer to simply pray that Colossians 2:7 will be true of us. In Jesus name, I pray this, amen.
Question to ask myself: Am I rooted in Christ deeply?
