Some people believe that you can’t know for sure until you die if you’ve made it into heaven. Is this biblical, does God leave us hanging on a thread of hope, or can we KNOW that we are saved right now? The people I meet that have this belief, often wear themselves out doing good works and never experience the “peace that passes all understanding” (Phil 4:7), because they are never sure if they have ‘ticked all the boxes’ so to speak, and covered everything that God requires. This belief can come from a number of issues: 1) If you’re not saved you will not have that assurance of being saved. 2) If you’re following another jesus or spirit (2 Cor 11:4) which is not the Jesus or Holy Spirit of the Bible. 3) If you have not been taught the Word of God. 4) If your living in an Old Covenant mindset.
So let’s turn to scripture to find out what the Bible says. Can you know that you are saved? In 1Co 2:9 “...Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him”. This is actually an Old Testament scripture from Isaiah 64:4 quoted by the Apostle Paul, but if we keep reading we find the very next verse tells us “BUT” which means, ‘that is how it used to be’ in the Old Covenant. Now I’m about to tell you how it is NOW! in the New Covenant. Verse 10 says “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit...” God want us to know what he has “prepared for them that love him”, and he reveals these things through His Spirit. Then two verses down we find again that God confirms his desire for us to know these things in verse 12 “...that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.” Salvation is a free gift not of works lest any man should boast.
Let’s look at more scripture. We read in 1Jn 4:17 “Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment.” We can have boldness in that day, it does not say we are in fear or uncertainty but we are bold. We can walk right in and say “hi Papa to our Heavenly Father”. Verse 18 continues to give us more understanding, “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. God is love”. If we are born again we have his Spirit dwelling within us, so we have ‘love’ dwelling in us. It also says “he that feareth is not made perfect in love,” if your fearing God’s judgement (as a born again believer), then you’re not made perfect or complete in God.
We are told ‘fear hath torment’. Is torment and fear from God? No! We know God is love and if you are born again you have nothing to fear from Him, you know God loves you, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life,” John 3:16. In Rom 8:15 we find this confirmed again to us, “For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.” We do not fear God, we are His children and He is our Abba, Father. Let’s keep reading, (verse 16) “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: (17) And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ...” Heirs or children don’t fear coming home to be with their Abba, Father, unless of course they’ve been continual in disobedience. We are heirs, and as heirs we have the right to come home, it belongs to us. If you are unsure or fearful of standing before God when you die, or even if you’re unsure if your saved, I can assure you from the Word of God that we just studied, that it is not God’s will for you to think or feel that way. If you’re not born again then simply repent of your sins, ask Jesus to forgive you and commit your life to Him, read and obey his Word- the Bible. If you’re following another spirit or another jesus, repent of idolatry, ask Jesus to forgive you and commit your life to him, read and obey his Word- the Bible. If you’re not being taught the Word of God then find a Bible believing church who will teach you the Word. If you’re living with an Old Covenant mindset, then study the Bible, get scriptures in context and start living out of the New and better covenant.
