We must. People in our locality—and millions around the world— are sliding towards hell with the same inevitability as night following day. That should bother us. It should consume us. Can we really love our neighbour as ourselves and stand by as they go to the second death? The rich businessman in NY or London without salvation is just as lost as the poorest villager in Africa.

Yet evangelism in most churches is as popular as a Siberian holiday in December! Going outside with the gospel is a lead-balloon subject —but surely not to God!

Action regarding the unsaved doesn’t top most churches’ hit parade, and scheduled outreach is mostly missing from the church program. Many pastors preach evangelism but don’t practise it. Why then should the congregation?

Thank God for those who do take the message, but generally, church members drift on a sleepy ocean of inward-looking Christianity. Believers drive miles to listen to this or that speaker at conferences and seminars—usually on how much God is going to bless them. None of it has any effect on those bound for the lake of fire.

Ten am Sunday and people are anywhere but the church. In bed, or preparing for a picnic, maybe reading through the 100-page newspaper, watching cable TV, mowing the lawn, working on their car, at the sports stadium. Yet we still sit in the church and expect them to come in.

We have failed in getting the gospel across and we have to change that. Years ago it was different. We saw public rallies on big-city street corners. Fervent preaching with no notes, no mincing of words. They spoke from the heart on the blood, the cross, repentance. There was singing and testimonies. Crowds were curious and listened. Hence there was a God-consciousness which has mostly disappeared.

Now, because of our public absence, satan is smiling. He has turned a homosexual into a “gay.” Homosexual marriages are a fact. Adultery is an affair. De facto relationships are considered normal, and the law even caters for such. “Reality TV” shows encourage participants to indulge in sex outside marriage. On those same TV screens, dead bodies, violence and four-letter obscenities (once banned) are seen and heard daily. The Lord must be weeping.

So we have to rethink our priorities. A church should be a place where Christians are stirred, motivated by evangelistic pastors to do something about this lost world. As leaders in God’s army, pastors and ministers have to lead in this. The infantry has little spirit when the generals never visit the battlefield.
