A LONG MELODIOUS SONG,
AND PLAYING
ON A BIG HARP.]
[NOD.]
"Did who what,
My precious."

(Loud, irritable,
West-Philly-born-nasal-voice
carrying the remnants
of a two-week-
old-head-cold.)
"ADAM!
Did HE HAVE A BELLY-BUTTON?"
(Squint up at the wall.)
"Cuz.....Ya know:
he really wasn't BORN,
WAS he?"

[NOD TO ANOTHER BLOND,
CURLY-HAIRED ANGEL
STANDING IN THE THRONE
DOORWAY. THIS ANGEL
ISN'T MELANCHOLIC AT
ALL: HE IS JOLLY-FACED,
AND AS CUTE AS A BUTTON*.]
[PATIENT VOICE.]
"He was created
from the dust
of the earth,
Mein kin'der."

(Shout to the ceiling.)
"But...what about
his...BELLY-BUTTON?
DID HE HAVE ONE....
or NOT?"

[PATIENT FROWN.]
"What have I
told you about
the shouting,
Mein kin'der."

(Cup hands to mouth.)
(Shout louder.)
"That....I DON'T NEED TO?"

[PATIENT SIGH.]

[SHOUT.]
"SO?"

[PATIENT FROWN.]
[SHAKE HEAD.]
[GLANCE DOWN AT
THE NOTE JUST DELIVERED
BY THE REALLY CUTE,
SEXY ANGEL WEARING
NOTHING BUT A TORN,
LINEN BEIGE SHIRT AND A
COUPLE OF GORGEOUS
WINGS. THE SHIRT
IS OPEN JUST A TAD
OVER HIS CUTE
BELLY-BUTTON: IT'S
AN OUTTIE.]

(Impatient frown.)
"Are You gonna TELL
ME, OR NOT....?"

[FOLD UP NOTE.]
[GIVE A MUTE COMMAND
TO THE CUTE ANGEL,
WHO DEPARTS: HIS
GORGEOUS WINGS
FOLLOWING HIS CUTE,
SEXY BUTT.]
[SHAKE HEAD,
IN CONSTERNATION.]
[SIGH.]
"Child, to Whom
are you speaking?"

(Squint.)
"To the One Who
Invented the Big BANG?"

[BURST OF GENTLE LAUGHTER
FROM THE RIGHT SIDE
OF THE THRONE.]

"Who's LAUGHIN',
up THERE?"

[SHAKING HEAD,
ONCE MORE.]
[CHUCKLE.]
"The One,
Who gave you
your
navel."

the Lord
God
formed man
of the dust
of the ground,
and breathed
into his nostrils
the breath
of life.
