Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah {Psalm 62:8}
God has blessed me dearly with the opportunity to stay at home with my son for 3 years, and I am so incredibly grateful! The time has come, however, for me to trade in the diaper bag for a briefcase. I would like to be able to contribute, financially to our household, but of course, I want to accomplish that with a job I actually like! Sounds crazy, I know. But I believe God hears my prayers and will answer in a way that's first best for Him, then for me.
I must admit that for a while, I've been feeling a little desperate and rather anxious. It's been a while now and it just seems like there's no way this particular desire could be fulfilled. What kind of job could possibly provide a great salary, decent hours that cooperate with my husband's schedule, with a reputable company, having to do with some form of ministry or serving - THAT I WILL ENJOY DAILY???! That's a pretty tall order in this day and age! Did I mention my only training and experience is in the airline/airport industry?
....but God has surely listened and heard my voice in prayer. {Psalm 66:19}
Low and behold, last week the perfect opportunity just kind of fell into my lap - something I NEVER would have thought of! It was a position with a wonderful group of women all about God! The pay was amazing, I would do my own scheduling AND it was for only 5 months out of the year!! This was EXACTLY what I was looking for! So I showed up for the interview SO READY instead of my usual nervously, nauseated self. But as the lovely young interviewer probed more and more into my skills, training and experience, it became clear this position was certainly not for me. It turned out to be a job requiring the savvy dynamic of a quick thinking and persistent saleswoman........if you know me, you're laughing hysterically right now. The only thing I sold that day was the fact that I was completely unable to do the job successfully.
As I waited for confirmation of failure, there was a confident glimmer of hope that all the other applicants proved to be much more incompetent than I, leaving me as the only viable option. Surely God would give me what I needed to complete this task successfully, after all it is for Him. A few days later, I received the call I knew in my heart would come. I didn't get the job. I gracefully accepted the news and cheerfully requested my resume be kept on hand should something more suitable become available. And that was it. I REALLY thought this opportunity was handcrafted for me by God Himself. I was so disappointed. But something was unusual. I didn't shed one tear! Normally, I would cry myself into a beat-red and puffy mess in a situation such as this. But......nothin'.
The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. {Psalm 34:17-18}
God had given me such peace, that even though I was a bit let down, I was OK. What a JOYOUS experience....it was as though He took me in His loving arms and whispered the most comforting words in my ear. "I'm still here with you. I just needed you to see that I CAN DO ANYTHING; things you cannot even imagine or dream of. I have something so much better in store for you. You will have what you need, when you need it, and not before. Trust in me."
For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. O LORD Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in you. {Psalm 84:11-12}
But let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you. For surely, O LORD, you bless the righteous;you surround them with your favor as with a shield. {Psalm 5:11-12}
