Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday April 7, 2010

How many times have parents/grandparents been through this hoop? "Well, WHAT do you want?" Finally, the answer comes usually accompanied by sobbing, "I DON'T know!"

It's a pretty safe bet that if you do not know what you want, you won't get it and if you did; how would you know?

Adults are much the same, especially those who make a career of being unhappy and searching endlessly for "What I want."

Dr. Tom Wallace often told of a man who went into a diner and asked the waitress for an order of bacon and eggs. He told her to scramble one and fry the other sunny side up. And oh, yes rye toast please. The poor waitress came back in short order with the man's order and he complained that she had scrambled the wrong egg and buttered the toast on the wrong side.

Sadly many preachers and more congregants could not tell you what they really want if their life depended on it. Tragically the abundant life promised by Jesus does in fact depend on you having a decent idea of what you want.

It will pay enormous dividends to you if you take the time to prayerfully define what would like for Christ to do in your life, what type of work, whom to marry, where to live, how many children etc. And more important attempting to ascertain through prayer and a growing knowledge of the word just what kind of person am I to be?

Years ago I heard and watched a well known preacher attempt with all his might to convince men in the audience to be like him. I recall thinking, "I am already goofy enough, I want to look at another model." The man influenced many to copy cat his peculiarities and to miss his better points.

With Christ as the exemplar, why do we settle for emulating someone else?

So what do you want? It is imperative to determine this and the sooner the better.

"When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind."
