Larry Lilly's Letter Monday April 5, 2010

I love to laugh and to laugh at serious truth because you know by experience or valid promise the truth of it is an especially good laugh.

The other morning I read a quote listed by my daughter, Jennifer Cooper, on Facebook that really brought near a belly laugh.

"I couldn't wait for success, so I went ahead without it."

The statement is attributed to the urbane comic, Jonathan Winters, one of my favorites in year's gone bye. When you think about it all motivational instructions toward a goal contain this idea. If you wait until you have everything you need it is unlikely that you will ever take the smallest baby step toward your goal, your dream. Most of humanity is shipwrecked the Pathetic Ocean's Someday Isle.

I already know most biblically oriented folks are not all that interested in motivation, we just wait for Pastor to tell us and if we feel like it we will move out by faith to bake a pie for the quarterly supper. No wonder Nitro is in most pockets or purses. We have thrilled ourselves to death with the excitement.

That God through His Word sets the goal of Christlikeness before our eyes and heart in attested in multiple ways in the scripture and we are to by faith take the steps, the challenges that come our way and step out. Keep in mind that stepping out by faith in the promises of God is NOT blind faith, but simple trust in the ONE who uttered the promise. Notice a few scriptures that operate on the Waggy Winter's Principle:

1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Ephesians 2:6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:

Philippians 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Paul was pressing on the upward way and encourages us to do the same, not so that we may "sit" with Christ, but because judicially we ARE seated with Christ and we want our earthly experience to correspond with the heavenly reality.
