Rules
Some rules are friends,
keeping us safe
and secure,
keeping order
and harnessing extremism.
Then there are the other ones
wielded by inflated egos;
the power masks of the insecure.
Jesus said pray for authorities
obey the law
keep
the commandments.
He knew rules could help us
or cause frenzy in the ranks.
Harsh or unjust rules scar dignity;
obedience may follow
but with certain
fearful
calculation.
God’s rules are
not burdensome; His yoke,
He says, is
light.
Why is surrender
then, still so
damn taxing?
Perhaps it is not
always so much
the rules,
but
the
people.
