A baby was on its way—a car without gas—and a tired missionary blessed by it.

“Help me. My wife's having a baby. My car doesn't have any gas. Betsy's car will not go on the highway. Take us to the hospital in Tuba City.” Raymond blurted out. He never attended our church services, but now he wanted our help.

Earlier that day, the missionary, Leon Wallace, had helped another baby . Helen Yazzie-Jones, the grandmother, and the baby's mother came over and said, “Our baby's sick. Can you take us to the hospital in Tuba City?”

Leon took one look at the baby. He heard the rasp of pneumonia coming from the baby's throat. “Yes, we'll take her,” he agreed.

We drove about ninety miles to Tuba City. When the doctor examined the baby, he talked to Helen and Sarah, “This baby is very sick; she is dehydrated. She will have to stay in the hospital to get well.” Sadly, we left the baby behind and rode back to Inscription House.

Leon could not refuse Helen's request. She faithfully attended the preaching services in our blue bus. She sang out lustily in our song services as I played my accordion. When we needed a place to park our bus, she cleared the land. She offered her land to us for a lease site.

When Raymond requested our help, Leon scratched his head and thought. “We just got back from Tuba City,” he said. “Our car is out of gas, too. Sorry we cannot help you.” Raymond left with a frown.

What did Raymond do? Perhaps he syphoned gas out of Baa's car.

After waiting nearly all day in Tuba City, Leon did not feel like another trip at the midnight hour. Not having enough gas for another trip proved to be a blessing in disguise at this midnight hour. He yawned and went back to bed, hoping no more Navajos were having babies that night.

That night we tasted of the Lord's goodness. "Taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in Him" (Psalm 34:8).
